Dont Get Busted For Duplicating DVDs Illegally

By Gregg Hall

Many people do not understand exactly what is considered legal and what is considered illegal where media is concerned. Some common questions include, "Is it legal to copy a song if you own the original already?" "Is it considered illegal if you record your favorite songs from the radio?" "Is it legal to record a movie from the television?" "Am I breaking the law by lending a friend of mine a CD or DVD?" Any of these questions can cause confusion within consumers are a daily basis. Thus the reason for this article, DVD duplication and the law, here we will look into the aspects involved in the subject.

Copyright protection is noticeable on a variety of media including, video, DVDs, printed books, and CDs. Basically the rule of thumb, is that all various types of entertainment are protected under copyright laws. What is copyright? It is protection for the owner or creator of the media, which gives them specific and legal rights to control and distribute it as they deem necessary. However, some owners will give permission for free and legal distribution by anyone. A good example of free distribution would include shareware and freeware software programs. These are software applications built and designed by any person and permission granted to distribute freely for the benefit of many people. Typically, this occurs when the owner is not seeking monetary gain for that product.

In the above case, any person would have rights in DVD duplication of that specific product. Cases where DVD duplication violates the law exist in instances where a person has, without prior consent of the owner, duplicated a movie onto a DVD. This would be consider illegal in accordance with copyright laws and regulations. Examples, of DVD duplication also include instances of download movies from the internet or using peer to peer programs to gain full length movies, these are very illegal and should never be resorted to under any circumstances.

You may have heard the news in recent times of "busts" occurring on those who choose to practice DVD Duplication. Any person caught willfully downloading illegal movies and practicing DVD Duplication could look forward to massive fines and or time in prison for these crimes. They are very serious crimes that are taken personally by the owners of the copyrighted DVDs and movies. The copyright laws are in places to protect owners from illegal activities, support the owners and actors by purchasing the DVD instead of practicing DVD duplication.

2001 Maniacs; Movie Review

By Nick Jones

Cast: Robert Englund, Lin Shaye, Giuseppe Andrews, Jay Gillespie, Marla Malcolm, Matthew Carey, Dylan Edrington, Mushond Lee, Bianca Smith, Brian Gross, Gina Marie Heekin, Adam Robitel, Brendan McCarthy, Christa Campbell, Wendy Kremer, Kane Hodder.

My Thoughts:Predictable

Review: "2001 Maniacs" is supposed to be a remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis' "Two Thousand Maniacs". While I have never seen that movie, the problem with "2001 Maniacs" is that it's too predictable. .

The story follows 2 separate groups of young people who are headed to Daytona Beach Fl. for spring break. Unfortunately they come across a detour sign in the road and as any good horror fan knows, "Detour" signs always mean "danger" in a horror movie. Before they know it, both groups of teens have stumbled upon a hick town called "Pleasant Valley", where the people albeit strange as hell, seem friendly enough. Soon another handful of young people arrive into town, a black guy named Malcolm and his asian girlfriend Kat.

The citizens of Pleasant Valley make all of the northern young folks their guests of honor and waste no time in showing a little bit of southern hospitality. But soon some of the young northern travelers begin to disappear, and it becomes evident that all may not be what it seems with the so called good folks of Pleasant Valley who behind the unsuspecting northerners backs, are planning a huge "Feast"...literally. "2001 Maniacs" offers up a good subplot which explains the towns sudden appearance out of nowhere. It seems back during the civil war a group of renegade northern soldiers wiped out the entire town of Pleasant Valley, all 2001 of it's citizens in fact.

Now they have come back for revenge against the north, on the same day their town was desecrated all of those years ago no less, and it's made obvious early on that these northern travelers are in for some bad times. However...it takes the travelers awhile to realize it and the question becomes, will they be able to put 2 and 2 together before it's too late? While "2001 Maniacs" certainly delivers in the blood, gore, and overall splatterfest department...the film lacks an ora of mystery and telegraphs itself way too early. Everything happens the way you would expect it to up until the end, where a little bit of creativity is shown when the last two survivors are thrown into a fight for their lives. The kills are rather creative but you can pretty much figure out who's going to die and in what order which further enhances this films predictable nature. The people of Pleasant Valley themselves are an annoying bunch, even the very attractive girls in the town are painful to w atch when they start talking.

The southern stereotypes from beastiality jokes, incest jokes, and just overall southerners being disturbingly odd jokes are all over the place in this movie. And that's what kills most of the fun. It would've been a nice change of pace to have the folks of Pleasant Valley differ in persona rather than having each one act the same as the other. The teens of the movie are portrayed a little bit better. While we get the usual group of guys out to get laid, we also get a guy with two female friends who has a huge twist applied to his character later in the movie. You'll have to see it for yourself but take my word for it it's pretty funny, and we get the interracial couple in which the black guy is a biker and digs Led Zepplin...which pretty much is the ultimate in creating an outside the box character.

Robert Englund gives a good performance as Mayor Buckman of Pleasant Valley which is rivaled only by Lin Shaye as Granny Boone. But even the two of them can't fully make up for the rest of the actors who portrayed Pleasant Valley citizens in a very subpar manner. "2001 Maniacs" does have it's good points also, and director Tim Sullivan who also co-wrote the film with penner Chris Kobin - really knew how to make this a "horror movie". No annoying cut aways or shortening of scenes to avoid showing too much blood on screen. No we get the full deal here which includes body crushing, mutilations, eyeballs popping out of their sockets, death by acid, and two others kills which are even more twisted than those I just mentioned. I just wish they had surrounded all of this great blood, gore, and mayhem with some better villains.

While I thought Englund was a great villain as Mayor Buckman, the other baddies were either portrayed by bad actors or were just too annoying to be cool villains. Now you could say because I'm a northern guy I don't connect with the whole southern persona thing, which is why I didn't care for most of the villain characters. But on the flipside of that I thought the Firefly clan in "House of 1000 Corpses" which was yet another psycho redneck flick, were awesome villains. But they were much more hardcore than the Pleasant Valley folk, who came off to me as just a little bit too cornball and not serious enough to make them good villains.

Pros: Creative kills, blood and gore abound, the northern travelers were likeable for the most part. The films final act which includes a showdown between the two survivors and Mayor Buckman and the citizens of Pleasant Valley was awesome. Lin Shaye gives a good performance as Granny Boone despite limited screen time.

Cons: With the exception of Robert Englund as Mayor Buckman The villains weren't badass enough, and like I stated in the review everything is spelled out to the viewer too quickly as to what will happen to these kids and how. I also did not like the ending and the chain of events which lead up to the films final ending left me shaking my head.

Overall: Average horror movie that has a few items which save it from being a total waste of time. Worth a rental when it hits dvd March 28th.

DVD Online Club - Why I Went With the Best and Cheapest Way to Rent Movies

By Anthony Kristovich III

Out: Driving to the local video store to rent a video.
In: Visiting a DVD online club to rent a video to have it sent to your home effortlessly.

Out: Waiting in long lines at the local video store.
In: Choosing which movies to have sent to you from a website in moments.

Out: Not finding the video you really wanted at the video store, the whole reason you went there. That, and having to find a "good enough" movie.
In: Choose the movie you really want among tens of thousands of choice. The one you want, everytime.

These things describe why I switched to a DVD online club. From my experience, everytime I went to the local video Blockbuster, I never got the movie I really wanted. The new releases were always out for weeks, and you had to practically stalk the store to get one when it came back in. That, and recently I had the urge to watch an old movie, Karate Kid 1 (the original where he learned karate). After going there a couple of times, I found out someone had kept the video out and maybe at some point they'd get a new one in as the person decided to keep it apparantly. Ok, so I went to Walmart, but the movie wasn't there. So it comes down to I have to order one in from Amazon.com it seems if I want to watch it. I never quite took to Netflix after my credit card number got stolen years ago and that's what the person did, they ordered videos from Netflix. So, recently I came across this place called Intelliflix and I never went back to Blockbuster again. The old movie was great to see again.

That's why I chose to change to a DVD online club, but everyone has their own reasons. I have compiled together a list of all the great things about switching to a DVD online club since some you don't realize until after you switch, like a bonus:

  • No late fees or return dates. While this is true about Blockbuster now (if you don't count the restocking fee) , it is 100% true about these DVD online clubs.
  • Great for old movies or unusual, lesser-known movies. This was very true in my case, and I'm sure it has been with other people as well.
  • The movies you really want are actually there and ready to rent now. Plenty of movies to go around, something you can't get in a little store.
  • Delivered to your door. You can't get any easier than this! What you want, delivered right to you in no time.
  • Fast, free delivery, usually in 1 day from my experience. Some DVD online clubs get the movies to you faster than others. The biggest DVD online club is not Blockbuster or Netflix. There is one that has many, many more distribution centers, meaning you get the video much faster to your door.
  • Free shipping both to your home and also back to the DVD online club. The only fees are the low monthly subscription fees.
  • 3-4 videos out a a time. Once you watch a video, pop it back in the mail, and in a couple of days you get your next video choice at your door.

I used to spend way more money in the local video store than I do for my DVD online club monthly subscription. Heck, I spend more driving to work and back on just 3 of the days than I do on my subscription. The difference is, now I actually get to watch what I want, when I want it. Seems simple, but when you're spending your hard-earned money, you should be able to at the least get the movie you really want. Now, I do have to say one DVD online club stands above the rest, both in having a cheaper price, a bigger selection, and much faster shipping, but I won't mention it in this article as I'm focusing on the DVD online club market in general and why it's a blessing. You can watch literally any movie you want one after another. I usually have a pile of 3 videos on top of the tv, so I can't even remotely watch them as fast as I can get them. But I do get to see what I want now, not what I'm stuck with. Wax on .. wax off!

How to Get Free Movie Downloads

By Monice Dulcinea

Movies are a big business and the internet is helping them along quite well. Thanks to the new technology that allows movies to be played on the computer you are easily capable of having an entire movie collection right on your desktop providing you have the right type of computer.

The free movie download is something that entices a good many people to make the change to the internet format of movies and all that comes with it. Barring any unforeseen circumstances in the near future, people will spend a fair amount of time downloading their favorite films right onto their computers and then playing them on the DVD players and such that grace their entertainment centers. But there is the matter of copyright and piracy laws that you should be aware of. There is not always the legal right to be downloading a movie and you should be very careful of the people who offer them for nothing.

A free movie download can be gotten legally through a good many channels. That means that the download of the movie is free but not the site in general. Most often you will see that many of the sites that offer the free movie download do so by offering unlimited downloading for a flat monthly fee. This is opposed to the sites that charge per download and allow for you to rack up quite the large bill in the meantime. This is truly the only legal way to get a free movie download because the sites are required to pay a certain percentage of the money they take in to royalties. So that way they do not violate the many copyright laws that govern the whole movie industry.

There is a set fee for the free movie download sites and you can manage to get some of the sites for free if you know what you are doing. Many of these places will offer the first month for free and then require you to pay from there on out. So if you can manage to get all of the movies that you want in the first month then cancel the subscription then you will actually have gotten a free movie download. Not all of the sites allow for this though. Many of them have minimum times that you must be a member to get the free month. You should read all of the fine print before signing up for anything.

What Does Anamorphic Mean on a DVD?

By Stephen Kinsey

What does it mean when a DVD is described as being Anamorphically Enhanced?. Basically this means that the picture is stretched vertically on the disk. When the disk is played the picture is resized by the DVD player depending on the shape or format of your TV set.

For example if a film is described as being in a 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen format then on a conventional 4:3 (square) format television the player will squash the picture to the correct size and insert black bars at the top and bottom of the picture.

Play the same film on a Widescreen TV and the player will keep the same vertical resolution but stretch it widthways. The image therefore will maintain the correct aspect ratio but also fill the whole screen.

The reason disks are encoded this way is to utilise the maximum resolution of the picture format (PAL, NTSC etc.) without wasting screen lines on displaying black bars.

You will quite often find that the term anamorphic isnt mentioned on the disk box. If you see "16x9 Enhanced for Widescreen TV", this basically means the same thing.

Also you will sometimes see DVDs described as either 16x9, 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. 16x9 means that the disk has been optimised for widescreen TVs while 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 are measurements of width to height ratio. 1.85:1 will roughly fill a widescreen TV, where as 2.35:1 is more of a cinematic format and will cause black bars at the top and bottom even on a widescreen TV.

Your Quick Guide To Car DVD Entertainment System

By Joshua Poyoh

The automotive industry is getting more ideas on how to pamper the passengers. One of the ways is to have a car DVD entertainment system installed. Such a system can really be a life saver to the driver. Why? Imagine, you're headed across the country with your family to visit the in-laws in Omaha, and your kids are driving you nuts. A car DVD system allows you to pop in one of their favorite movies and have them entertained for hours while on the road.

Today's auto market is becoming more and more diversified, with Hummers lining up next to Smart Cars and Geo Metros in dealer lots. Perhaps one of the things many people do when they bought a new vehicle is to customize it with gadgets and accessories. Bored spouses and kids make car DVD systems one of the hottest new upgrades on the automotive consumer market.

There are two main types of in car DVD systems: portable and in-dash. Portable systems, though not as sleek or worry-free as the in-dash systems, are considerably cheaper and more versatile. They are usually powered by your car's 12-volt power adapter but can be converted to run from your home's power supply, allowing you to take the DVD player and monitor into your in-laws house when your happy family arrives.

In-dash car DVD systems are hardwired into your vehicle's entertainment system. They display movies either on a screen in the center-console, on a screen that descends from the roof of the vehicle, or on a screen which flips up from the dashboard. Though these systems aren't portable outside the vehicle, once installed they don't require any extra cords or setup: you can load in your movies and drive away. Screens located either on the center console or which flip up from the dashboard can double as displays for in-car GPS or navigation software, but they can be distracting to drivers. The flip-down screens avoid driver distraction, but they are usually only convenient for back-seat viewing, leaving a front seat passenger to count license plates or play I-Spy with the driver.

In car DVD systems are perhaps the biggest boon to the long family road trip since Car Bingo, and as the technology improves you can expect the systems to get smaller, lighter, and cheaper. Though portable systems are still the choice for families on the go since they require no expensive installation or conversion, more and more auto manufacturers have plans to include built-in systems in their vehicles, especially upscale and family autos.

Trust me; it will be tough to find a driver for your next road trip. The entire family wants to be stretched out in the back seat watching a movie.

How to Put Movies On Your PSP

By Travis Sago

Have you been pulling your hair out trying to put movies on your PSP? Many folks know it can be done but are confused on how to do it.

I am going to give you my quick and easy recipe for putting movies and video on your PSP. There are only a few steps and it is a cinch on you know how.

First like any recipe...You have your ingredients:

512 MB Pro Duo Stick (This is what holds your movie files (MP4)

DVD Player installed in your computer

DVD Ripper (This pulls the movie from the DVD to your computer)

PSP Video Converter (converts movie and video files to MP4 format that you watch on your PSP.)

(Note: There is software that has both the DVD Ripper and Converter combined)

USB Cable

1. Load your DVD and fire up your DVD ripper, select the movie or video you want to put on your PSP and hit the "extract" or "rip" button. Tell it where you want to save the file to.

2. If you already have movie and/or video files on your pc then all you need to do is hit "add" from your DVD ripper and tell it where you want to save the file to.

3. Select the file that you saved to your computer and hit the "extract and/or encode" button from your PSP video converter and save that file.

3. If you have DVD Ripper/PSP Video converter combo software...You can combine steps 1,2 and 3.

At this point you have the files on your PC...and they are in the correct format.

4. How to download or transfer your movies to PSP? Just connect your PSP with your PC with the USB cable, and create a folder on your Memory Stick called "MP_ROOT." and create a sub-folder called "100MNV01." under it. Copy your MP4 files to this location (no need to copy the .HTM files).

5. Now on your PSP go to video and memory stick and watch your movie!

That's it. It is real simple to put movies on your PSP!

Blu-ray and HD-DVD - A Brief Introduction

By Jesse Wallace

Do you have an old VCR gathering dust in the garage? How about a Laserdisc? Or a Betamax? If you do, it might be time to think about clearing a space out there for your DVD player, because the battle for next generation video format supremacy is about to hit your living room.

There are two competing technologies that will clamoring to get your support, one with a fancy name, the other with an acronym you'll recognize. They're essentially the same thing; compact discs with vastly increased storage capacities, but it seems likely that only one of Blu-ray or HD-DVD will survive.

Blu-ray - Named for the blue 405 nanometre laser that is used to write and read information on them, Blu-ray discs look exactly the same as the CDs and DVDs we have now. Championed by Apple, Sony, Dell, Samsung, Panasonic, Phillips, Pioneer, LG-Electronics and Mitsubishi, Blu-ray is the format of choice for the world's largest electronics companies. The video game industry, for the most part, is also on board, the most notable example being the Sony PlayStation 3's exclusive use of Blu-ray. They are faster, and will be able to hold more data (50GB) than the HD-DVD rival (30GB).

HD-DVD - They look the same as the old discs and they use use the same blue laser that Blu-ray does. So the factor that may sway the market towards HD-DVD is backwards compatibility. All HD-DVD players will still be able to play regular DVDs which will certainly attract those who have built up a large collection. Also on the side of HD-DVD is the movie industry with Universal, Warner Brothers, New Line, and Paramount all showing support. Coupled with the backing of the major players in the IT industry - Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, Intel- it's HD-DVDs game to lose.

So why switch from DVD? Both formats guarantee picture and sound quality far superior to the current standard. In terms of online movie rentals, Netflix and Blockbuster Online are now renting both Blu-ray and HD-DVD disc for the same price as regular DVDs. Another potential benefit to consumers is increased storage space. Some companies charge extra for the shipment of the special features, claiming increased shipping costs for a second disc; a practice that would be eliminated if everything came on one.

So if you do not currently have a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player as part of your home theatre setup, you will soon be asked to make a decision. And when you do, make sure you choose carefully; there's a one in two chance you could be buying nothing more than a very expensive piece of electronics history.

Mission Impossible 3 Movie Review

By Jake Addison

It was a Friday night, and my routine has always been to look for a great action flick! So I took a look inside the Blockbuster video to see what would fulfill my need for an edge of your seat adrenaline thrill ride. As the Blockbuster I was in was unbelievably gigantic, it took me awhile to find the right action movie. And low and behold, there it was: Mission Impossible 3. I was kind of luke-warm to it at first as I watched the first two Mission Impossibles and had mixed reactions to both. But I didnt really see anything else that night that really kindled my interest, so I thought What the hellIll give it a shot.

It was literally just pouring down rain on my way back home. It wasnt a good night to do any outdoor activities, so hopefully, the movie I got would satisfy my night indoors. So I popped in the DVD and got ready to watch Mission Impossible 3.

As it started, I was really into itIt had a great beginning. The acting between Tom Cruise and Philip Seymour Hoffman was nothing short of phenomenal. And I must say that out of all the past Mission Impossibles, Mission Impossible 3 delivered the best storyline. Not only did it have a great story, but the way it was all put together was absolutely brilliant. I personally give JJ Abrams a pat on the back for his first theatrical project as everything was done in the best possible way for a Mission Impossible movie.

There were a lot of shocking moments and unexpected surprises through the movie that just made me feel like standing up and applauding. Out of the three movies in the franchise, I have to give Mission Impossible 3 the nod as it was the best one that was put together. It had the best cast of actors, the effects were incredible and the writing was exceptionally well done!

If anyone wants to see a really fulfilling action movie that will leave you on the edge of your seat and blow you away with some incredible special effects and an amazing story, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Mission Impossible 3. It went above and beyond my original expectations! I give it 9 out of 10.
